Families Building Communities

The Families Building Communities (FBC) program is designed to develop community leaders through personal and leadership development training that engages parents and caregivers and drives greater commitment to their own communities, instilling a sense of pride and accomplishment.

"It's never too late to discover your potential and put it at the service of the community."

How it works

The AVANCE Families Building Communities (FBC) program is a second-year program for graduates of our Parent-Child Education Program (PCEP). It is designed to empower adults to be leaders in their community, advocate for their rights, and strengthen communication with their children.

Like PCEP, the FBC program takes a two-generation approach that simultaneously engages parents and their children. Over the course of nine (9) months, parents and their children attend weekly 90-minute (1.5 hrs.) sessions together.

Parents and Caregivers

The FBC curriculum for parents and caregivers is built around each individual’s potential for success and leadership development in a community context. The 40 hours of instruction and hands-on learning include:

Personal Development
15 hours

Leadership Development
15 hours

Final Project based on Community Needs
10 hours

Children

While supporting adults to be leaders in their communities, it is important to ensure that their own families and children are given the tools to grow and engage with adults in as positive a manner as possible.

The Early Childhood component of the FBC program uses a PEEP and the Big Wide World curriculum designed to cultivate a love for science and celebrate curiosity and the joy of discovery. Children are invited to explore and learn about their world through hands-on experiments and activities that are developmentally appropriate for three- and four-year-olds.

PEEP and the Big Wide World material is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation. More About PEEP And The Big Wide World
